If you’ve finally hired professional organizers (yay!), or are thinking about pulling the trigger, you might be wondering:
Should I clean first?
Should I declutter before they come?
What if my house is… embarrassing?
First things first: you do not need to get your home “ready” for us.
That’s literally the job you’re hiring help for.
That said, there are a few simple things you can do to make your organizing session smoother, more efficient, and more impactful without adding stress to your plate.
1. Don’t Pre-Organize (Seriously!)
This is the biggest mistake people make, and often the biggest hinderance to hiring our service in the first place.
You don’t need to:
- Sort things into piles
- Buy bins
- Create labels
- “Tidy up” the space we’re working on
In fact, pre-organizing can slow us down. We need to see how the space actually functions for you, not how it looks on its best day. As professionals, we are trained to take cues from the current condition of your space that helps us customize a system that will easily translate to your personal needs and habits.
Messy is honest. Honest is helpful.
2. Think About Your Pain Points
While you don’t need a full plan, a little reflection can help us maximize our time so you get the most from your service.
Before your session, ask yourself:
- What frustrates me most about this space?
- What never seems to stay organized?
- What do I avoid dealing with?
There are no wrong answers here. This helps us design systems that work for your real life, not an ideal one.
3. Be Open (Not Perfect)
You don’t need to apologize for clutter. You don’t need to explain how it got this way.
Professional organizers aren’t here to judge; we’re here to problem-solve.
Clutter often comes from:
- Busy seasons of life
- Transitions (moves, kids, work changes, loss)
- Too many decisions and not enough time
If organizing feels emotional, overwhelming, or exhausting, that’s normal! You’re not alone. When we say we’ve seen it all, we really mean it.
4. Decide If You’re Ready to Let Go
You don’t have to declutter everything in advance, but it helps to come in with the mindset that some decisions may need to be made.
During a session, we’ll guide you through:
- What’s serving you
- What’s no longer working
- What’s okay to release
You’re always in control but being open to letting go allows the biggest transformation.
5. Make Basic Logistics Easy
A few practical things that help the session run smoothly:
- Make your space accessible – Make sure the space is accessible (pets secured if needed)
- Pick up any obvious trash – We are organizers, not cleaners!
- If we are organizing a kitchen or bedroom/closet, make sure to wash any dirty dishes or clothes. It’s important that we account for the full inventory of items that live in that space. If dishes are in the sink or clothes are in the wash, we may not be able to include those items when creating systems, which can lead to gaps or overcrowding later.
- Be available for questions or decisions. We know you’re busy and may not be able to spend a lot of time reviewing. But even a few minutes will make a huge impact on the outcome of your space.
- Let us know if there are time constraints or priorities.
You don’t need to hover, but your input matters. We do our best to organize based on function and how we would want things in our own home, but only you know what will and won’t work for your lifestyle.
6. Skip the Supply Shopping
Please don’t buy containers before we meet.
Why?
- Most people already own usable bins (we’re always happy to use pre-owned bins if budget is a concern)
- We don’t know what size or type you’ll need yet until we get deeper into a space
- Function always comes before aesthetics
We are in the bin business! Leave it to us to figure out the best containers and systems for your specific space. At every consultation, we measure and take photos so we’ll know exactly what fits best when planning for the project. We’re here to take the guesswork out of your hands!
7. Trust the Process
Organizing isn’t about creating perfection, it’s about creating ease.
Sometimes a space looks worse before it looks better. That’s normal. We’re taking everything out, making decisions, and building systems that last. I like to compare it to putting together a puzzle – sometimes we must try many different pieces until we find the perfect fit. And you won’t see the full picture until that final piece is set in place!
By the end, you should feel:
- Lighter
- Clearer
- More confident maintaining the space
Final Reminder
You are not hiring a professional organizer because you failed.
You’re hiring one because you value your time, energy, and peace.
Show up as you are. We’ll take care of the rest.
